Do I need mechanical handling aids?
If you have identified a risk, which can be practicably reduced or eliminated
by the use of mechanical aids, then you should provide them.
Moreover they should be considered as productivity aid as much as a health and
safety aid.
Does the task involve?
· Holding the load away from the body.
· Twisting, stooping or reaching upwards.
· Large vertical movements.
· Carrying over distance.
· Strenuous pushing or pulling.
· Unpredictable movement of loads
· Repetitive handling.
· Insufficient rest or recovery time.
· A work rate imposed by a process.
Are the loads?
· Heavy, bulky or unwieldy.
· Difficult to grasp.
· Unstable or unpredictable.
· Intrinsically harmful, i.e. hot, sharp.
