Handle-iT creates a bespoke Dolly for Joanna Lumley’s Carousel Horse
Every so often, a project comes along that reminds us why we love what we do — and this one was truly special. Way back during the dark times of Covid we received a call to brighten all of our days…
… none other than Joanna Lumley was on the phone! She needed Handle-iT to help with a unique request.
We were both delighted and humbled. Joanna had bought a vintage carousel horse which she wanted to use and move about her den for her and the grandchildren to enjoy. Joanna needed a custom-designed dolly to safely mount and move her cherished fairground carousel horse — a beautifully ornate piece with huge sentimental value.
Our design team got straight to work, crafting a bespoke solution that would provide stability and mobility but also compliment the elegance of the horse itself. Every weld, wheel, and fitting was considered — just as we do for any of our valued customers.
But here’s what made the project even more meaningful…Instead of paying for the design and fabrication, Joanna suggested that a donation be made to a local children’s ward — a cause very close to our Managing Director’s heart.
We couldn’t have agreed more. So, in true Handle-iT and Lumley spirit, we completed the job and Joanna made a donation to the Paediatric Oncology, Bramble Ward at Exeter Hospital which is close to all of our hearts following the amazing, attentive care that they provide.. It brought together craftsmanship, kindness, and community — the very values we’re proud to stand for.
Moments like these remind us that engineering and empathy can go hand in hand — and that sometimes, the most rewarding projects aren’t measured in invoices, but in impact.
