Dollies, skates and bogies are some of the simplest, yet effective pieces of MHE in the market. Remarkably cost effective, and even more versatile, the scope of what you can do with a dolly is only limited by your imagination. We have designed 10 000kg dollies to move train tracks under the Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham, 10 000kg Dollys to move Hydro dam Turbines over a bridge near Bilbao for our Spanish facility, through to small dollies in a train link for order picking in a Vape Juice Warehouse.

The simplicity is genius, a base with wheels. What Handle-iT does differently is marry the base we make to the products you are moving. Bolt holes added so that you can fix your product to the frame, recessed bases so that your product nestles into the base, cradle and V sections, so that your product is cradled within. Poles to insert into your product,  post to retain your product, strap loops to ratchet your product down.

The basic, barrel dollies, tote and box dollies, keg dollies, pallet dollies, all kept in stock for quick despatch. Whilst more obscure, weird and wonderful bits designed and manufactured to your specification by our own in-house teams. Our range of dollies can be made to any size, from any material, with any capacity. Add a handle, add a cradle, ATEX proof them, or make them interlock? If you can imagine it, we can make it!

Dollies, Skates and Bogies FAQ

A very simple platform with wheels, this allows the horizontal movement of the load without the need of physically lifting and carrying the load, the dolly will do the job for you. Dollies can come in a variety of shapes, sizes and style, anything from a piece of ply wood with wheels screwed into the corners, through plastic moulded bases with castors affixed. Or aluminium where the frame is manufactured perfectly to suit a tote box inside the frame, to rounded steel variants for drums and barrels. The dolly is a very flexible cost effective solution to horizontal movement.

Dollies are used in all types of environments, from keeping storage areas like a shed or garage organized and easily manoeuvrable, through replenishing fruit and vegetables in retail settings, through to feeding production lines with components. Dollies are a simple flexible low-cost solution to horizontal movements. The flexibility of the dolly allows you to place a load that is larger than the platform without being restricted by side panels you would have on platform trucks, or handles you would find on a flatbed trolley, offering a lot of flexibility from a product that costs so little.

Dollies are available to move anything from a box, through barrels, kegs and drums, machinery, furniture or desk, the list is endless, the dollies main attribute is its simplicity, basically allowing you to put wheels underneath any item to achieve simple horizontal movement of the load. If the dolly can take the weight it can move it. We have even manufactured dollies to move rail tracks which were 10,000kg, so this proves that a dolly is only restricted by the imagination.

Moving anything horizontally whilst alleviating the need to manually lift and carry the load. The simple platform mounted on usually 4 castors allows the load to be placed on the platform and the load moved along at floor level, making horizontal movement both more efficient and safer. Certain dollies have been manufactured for specific loads including oil drum dollies, beer keg dollies, and dollies for moving plastic tote boxes. But there is very little that a dolly can’t move, as long as the dolly can take the weight and that the platform is large enough to hold the load safely.

As with all handling tasks, ensure firstly you are prepared, you are wearing the correct personal protective equipment, steel toe caps are a must, as is a hi-vis, but also consider gloves and safety glasses where appropriate. Make sure that the dolly is in a good serviceable and operable condition, the frame is sound, and the wheels and castors swivel and rotate freely. Make sure the dolly platform is suitable for the load, we would like to see the base of the dolly encompass the base of the load, however this is not always a necessity as long as the load can be adequately supported and secured to the dolly. As a rule of thumb, the base being 1/3 of the length and width would be a great suggestion as a minimum. Make sure that the carrying capacity of the dolly is suitable and exceeds the weight of the load you are going to carry, sometimes multiple dollies can be used to move a single large or awkward item, in this case make sure every dolly is capable of carrying the load individually. Place the load gently on the dolly/dollies, and make sure the load is secure on the dolly base. Ratchet straps for heavy loads should be considered, for lighter loads in domestic settings bungee cords could be an option, however rarely or never are bungee cords specified to strengths so proceed with an abundance of caution. Please note that bungee cords are not appropriate in an industrial setting.

Moving product on dollies eliminates the need for staff or operators to physically carry load, this reduces the likelihood of strain injuries to staff carrying loads, also reducing the risks of slips and trips with people carrying larger loads that obstruct vision, make the operation of moving loads both safer and more efficient. Dollies are a remarkably cost effective and flexible products, but should always be used correct, with the appropriate training or guidance to achieve full benefits.
