Bespoke Dollies for RAF Bases
Posted by Kelly Hall on 18th Mar 2026

A recent delivery of 78 bespoke dollies arrived at RAF Odiham last week, marking a significant step forward in improving operational efficiency and safety across the base’s training environments. Specifically designed to transport large crash mats used in troop training exercises, these custom-built units demonstrate how thoughtful engineering can directly support frontline readiness.
Designed With Purpose
The primary function of these dollies is simple but critical: to move large, heavy crash mats quickly and safely to training areas across the base. Crash mats are essential in a wide range of exercises by helping to reduce injury risk during physically demanding drills, such as jumping from Chinnocks! However, their size and weight can make them cumbersome to manoeuvre without the right equipment.
By introducing purpose built transport solutions, the RAF can now ensure mats are positioned swiftly, securely, and with minimal manual handling. The result is not only improved efficiency but also enhanced safety for personnel.
From Trial to Rollout
Before committing to full production, we worked closely with the team at RAF Odiham to conduct an initial trial phase. This collaborative approach allowed us to gather valuable feedback from those using the dollies in real training scenarios.
During the trial, we refined and perfected the design, adding bracing to further support the mats and removing the bumper from the whole area of the frame to reduce some of the cost. Only once the units had been fully tested and approved did we proceed with the larger rollout order of 78 units.
This phased approach ensured that the final product was not only fit for purpose but tailored precisely to the operational demands of the base.
Six-Wheel Configuration for Maximum Performance
Each dolly has been designed and fitted with a six wheel configuration to provide the ideal balance between manoeuvrability and stability:
- Four corner swivel braked castors allow for smooth directional control and agile movement in tight or busy environments.
- Two centrally mounted swivel castors provide additional load-bearing stability, ensuring manoeuvrability under heavy loads.
This combination allows operators to navigate hangars, aprons, and training facilities with confidence, even when transporting large and potentially awkward mats.
Protecting High-Value Assets

Operating in close proximity to aircraft demands an added level of care. To address this, each dolly is fitted with protective corner bumpers. These safeguards help prevent accidental contact damage to high-value aircraft and equipment — a critical consideration in any RAF operational setting.
The inclusion of this feature reflects a clear understanding of the base environment and the importance of mitigating risk wherever possible.
Enhancing the MOD
With these dollies now in service, RAF Odiham benefits from faster deployment of mats and reduced physical strain (surely meaning more press ups undertaken!). When equipment can be moved quickly and safely, instructors and personnel can focus fully on the exercise at hand.
We are proud to have partnered again with the Royal Air Force. Keep up the great work ladies and gentlemen.
