Sack Truck Q&A
What is a Sack Truck?
A Sack Truck is a two-wheeled manual handling tool used for transporting a wide variety of loads.
Sack Trucks are sometimes referred to as "Sack Barrows" however these names are interchangeable.
The design of the Sack Truck has remained unchanged for years, and is a simple yet effective solution that is considered essential across various industries.
How Does a Sack Truck Work?
Sack Trucks work by allowing the operator to balance a load over a central pivot point.
The central axle of a Sack Truck also enables tight turns in small spaces, allowing it to access areas typically awkward or impossible for a 4-wheeled trolley equivalent.
Sack Trucks operate on balance and leverage principles. By balancing the load over the central axle, the evenly distributed weight feels lighter.
After putting a load onto the footplate and securing it to the upright frame of the sack truck using a strap, an operator can then hold the handle of a sack truck and tilt the sack truck backwards towards them. if the load has been positioned correctly, the load should be balanced over the wheels with the handle in a comfortable and ergonomic position for the operator.
What are Sack Trucks Used For?
Sack Trucks can be used to move goods with significantly reduced physical effort compared to moving things by hand, which increases efficiency while reducing strain and risk of injury.
Sack Trucks are widely used in warehousing, logistics, retail, and manufacturing.
Sack Trucks were historically used in markets, farms, and railways for bulk transporting goods. Many of these goods (such as grains, fertiliser, or coal) were stored in sacks, which is where the name Sack Truck comes from.
What Sack Truck Do I Need?
When choosing a Sack Truck, consider these key factors:
Load weight – Ensure the truck’s capacity exceeds your heaviest load. Most Sack Trucks load capacity is limited by their wheels.
Load size & shape – Flat-backed Sack Trucks for square loads; curved backs for round items, extended handles for tall loads.
Working environment – Any hazardous conditions such as salt water that have a risk of rust? Potential sharps that could damage the wheels? Loose or uneven surfaces that require a larger wheel?
Operator ability – does your operator have any specific needs or requirements? i.e. a taller operator will need a higher handle height than a shorter operator.
Sack Trucks are also available in a variety of materials such as steel, aluminium, stainless steel, and plastic, all for different environments and each with their own advantages or disadvantages.
There are lots of specialised Sack Trucks on the market. Here are some examples:
Electric Stair Climbing Sack Trucks
Sack Trucks for Moving Cylindrical loads (e.g., gas bottles and oil drums)
Sack Trucks for Moving White goods
Sack Trucks for Moving Beer kegs, casks, and barrels
Sack Trucks for Moving Water bottles
Sack Trucks for Moving Tombstones
How Much Weight Can a Sack Truck Carry?
The Sack Truck's capacity must be greater than the heaviest load.
A Sack Trucks weight capacity is often limited by the strength of its wheels. Be cautious of exaggerated claims.
How Tall Should a Sack Truck Be?
Taller Sack Trucks provide better leverage and reduce tipping risks.
Higher handles improve control when transporting larger loads.
Smaller Sack Trucks may be more suited to couriers who have limited space in their vehicles. Some Sack Trucks have folding or collapsible capabilities.
How Should I Position a Load on a Sack Truck?
Place the longest side of the load against the back of the Sack Truck for stability.
Reduces strain by keeping the centre of gravity close to the wheels.
How Should I Secure a Load To a Sack Truck?
Low-friction loads may slip, but you can improve grip by:
Adding foam rubber strips to the back. This is available as standard on some Sack Trucks.
Securing the load with ratchet straps or cam buckles.
Where is the Load Centre of a Sack Truck?
The load centre of a Sack Truck should remain over the central axle.
When securing a load to your Sack Truck, keeping the centre of gravity near the wheels will minimise the effort required to tilt back and operate the Sack Truck.
If a load is difficult to tilt back, seek assistance. Some Sack Trucks are available with a “Break Bar”, which can provide more leverage to tilt a Sack Truck.
What Environment Can You Use a Sack Truck In?
Consider floor conditions, weather, and frequency of use.
Stairs require either:
Two-person handling for occasional moves.
A Stair-Climbing Sack Truck for frequent heavy loads. Some stair climbing Sack Trucks are available with an electric powered motor, which can significantly reduce operator fatigue
What Are My Personal Abilities When Operating a Sack Truck?
The operator’s strength, weight, and height affect ease of use. As an example, a shorter, lighter operator may find it more difficult to tilt back a load.
A well-balanced load makes transportation easier and safer. If the operator is moving multiple items, storing the heaviest of loads at the bottom, and the lighter loads on the top will make balancing the sack truck easier to balance due to the lower centre of gravity.
What Footplate Should I Choose for My Sack Truck?
Width – Should be two-thirds of the load width to prevent tipping.
Length – Slightly over half the load length to stop it from falling forward.
Which Wheel Should I Choose for My Sack Truck?
Solid wheels – Best for smooth warehouse floors, but are not suitable over bumps or uneven ground.
Pneumatic tyres – Ideal for rough outdoor terrain, but are susceptible to punctures.
Polyurethane Foam – Offer a puncture-proof, durable, and smooth ride. Suitable for all environments.
How to Maintain My Sack Truck and Keep It Safe?
Sack Trucks fall under PUWER regulations (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998).
Annual inspections by a competent person are legally required.
Risk Assessing the environment, the load, and the equipment helps to identify and mitigate any hazards or risks.
Regular maintenance reduces breakdowns and improves safety.
Service and maintenance check sheets are available to help track inspections and compliance.
