Simply the one with the biggest wheel.

Ever wonder why 4x4s have big wheels?

It's to negotiate the rough ground, so the larger the diameter wheel the better. The second determining factor is the material of the wheel. If you have a plasticky wheel, it’s just not going to work. Pneumatic tyres are historically the best as they offer suspension over the ground; however, the downside is if you get a puncture somewhere between your car and your pitch, you are in trouble. So, with the advances in material over the last 20 years, blown polyurethane tyres now offer a great answer to that issue. Blown polyurethane foam offers a solid tyre and, like an Aero bar, has millions of bubbles of air spun into the mould, offering a small amount of suspension without the deflating punctures.

How much weight can a festival and camping trolley carry?

Be careful; my pet hate is stated capacities on trolley. The law in the EU suggests we should rate our trolley on only three wheels; however, the Chinese rate their manufactured product over four wheels, which to an untrained eye makes them look stronger than the other one on your screen. Also, some retailers who maybe aren't either as conscientious, honest or knowledgeable oversell their product to make it look better than it is. We have a video showing this here.

But still, no matter what the capacity says on the website, ask yourself: can you move the weight that it says it can carry?

If you can’t, and being frank, 150kg being pulled through mud and long grass, up hills is a lot for anyone to move, particularly when you haven’t slept for three days, and the only fluid you have consumed is alcohol, you certainly won't be able to do it. The important thing is how the trolley rolls over the ground, so going back to the start of this, the wheel is the MOST, MOST important thing you should be considering. With the ground how it usually is at Glastonbury, a minimum 12-inch or 300mm wheel is the bare minimum you should consider. Or take no notice whatsoever; go and buy a folding canvas bag with four 8-inch moulded plastic wheels, and I will be the one laughing heartily watching you struggle, while I’m chilling in my trolley, which becomes a chair and a bed. Camp King is the only way forward. I design industrial trolleys for the biggest companies in the world, and this was a bit of fun. I took my memories of my old mongoose BMX, combined it with the mental scarring of seeing my mother topless on the sunbed, modified it up a touch to cope with Glastonbury, and trust me, came up with the ONLY suitable festival trolley in the market. Your only complaint will be “it’s a bit big”.

Are festival trolleys with pneumatic wheels better?

Yes, historically, but the world has changed a lot since the penny farthing, and materials have moved on a lot. Blown polyurethane, used a lot in industry, now offers a solid wheel without the suspension of a pneumatic tyre but without the deflation or punctures. The material is very important but not as much as the size of the wheel; this is where bigger is better. The larger the diameter of the wheel, the easier it will ride over bad ground, mud lumps and bumps.

Will it get from the car park to your pitch?

Which many won't. So picking a cheap beach trolley or kid-type garden wagon just will not cut it at a festival. I am sure you have seen them with the wheel snapped off and people hand balling their beer to their tent. It's all to do with a bad choice of wheel, or a bad retailer picking something cheap from China with little or no experience in what they are selling. With 25 years' experience designing trolleys for industry, designing a trolley for a festival was easy, and more importantly, a bit of fun. It's wheelie all about the wheel. Minimum 300mm diameter or 12 inches. If you ignore that last bit, you deserve the grief you are going to give yourself.

How do I clean a camping trolley bed cover?

To clean a Camp King bed base, simply undo the buckle on the back and put it in the washing machine. Job done.

Is a 3-in-1 trolley worth the extra cost?

No, unless it’s a Camp King. If it is, and you want to chill in a chair looking down a hill at your band playing, or if you, like me, are far too old to try and sleep on wet grass and would dream of a bed, if you could sleep, then a Camp King is a must. In fact, it should have been called a Glam-king.

How do I assemble a festival and camping trolley?

The assembly of some Garden Carts or Beach Wagons, which have just been rebranded for a few weeks in the summer to take a few more quid from your Glasto budget, can take forever. We sell them, and our assembly guys build them all day every day, and it still takes them 30 minutes and a well-stocked tool box. Whereas the Camp King is as simple as slotting in two axles, adding two wheels and four pins, and you're off. And it should take no tools, no experience and next to no time.
