Ever wondered how Deadman Brakes work on trolleys? There are several types of deadman brake that use different systems, however one of the simplest and most robust systems utilises a solid "breaking rod" that applies pressure to the wheels of the trolley with the use of a spring. Commonly used on Airport Trolleys, this braking rod is attached to the front of a handle, which when pressed down levers the back end up, pulling up the braking rod and releasing pressure from the wheel.

The brakes themselves are available in multiple types, such as a simple braking pad or a shoehorn brake. The simple braking pad applies pressure to the top of the wheel, whereas the shoehorn brake applies pressure to the sides to reduce wear, and apply a more reliable and efficient brake.
