What is the best trolley for shelf organization?

Shelf spacing on trolleys is very much determined by the sizes of the products that you are picking onto the trolley. There is no point in having 300mm spaces between shelves if your boxes are 320mm. This problem can always be exacerbated when you buy a trolley with a 300mm shelf spacing and your supplier changes a box size to 320mm, making your trolley fleet redundant. So, having shelves that can be adjusted quickly, or a fixed shelving system that can be readjusted when these things happen, can save you a large bill later in life to either modify your existing trolleys or have to buy new ones. We term this “future-proofing” and it's always a good idea to consider this future-proofing wherever you can, but it's difficult.

What trolley is ideal for moving stock efficiently?

Shelf trolleys are generally a great way to move stock, especially in smaller volumes or where the stock needs to stay segregated. This increases the efficiency when unloading and reduces the likelihood of the wrong products being put in the wrong location when working under pressure. Shelf trolleys also help move stock while reducing the need for changing the stock height, reducing the need to bend and stoop, increasing safety and reducing the likelihood of back strains, which can happen with any weight box, but particularly heavier items. Take the heavier loads from waist height to waist height, eliminating bending and stooping. The lighter loads then can be placed on the lower or higher height shelves.

Which trolley offers multiple shelves for easy access?

There are many types of shelf trolley on the market. We offer many types at www.handle-it.com, but the most important thing for you to consider, wherever you buy the shelf trolleys from, is that the shelves are easily capable of taking the loads placed on them. Many shelf trolleys will have an overall capacity, but check the physical capacity per shelf. You will sometimes be surprised by the very low capacities some shelf trolleys can handle on the shelves, and that the bulk of the load is placed only on the base. Caution is the advice, and if what you are buying doesn’t show a capacity per shelf, insist that the seller provides this for you.

What is the best compact trolley for small item storage?

There are many variables. The weight of the stock is critical. If the loads are heavy and the packaging is quite flimsy, you don’t want to be stacking the goods on top of each other, so that you avoid damage to your stock. In this case, a small trolley with numerous shelves is the better solution. However, if the stock is large and light, then you can consider fewer shelves, which will reduce the cost.

What trolley is best for picking and transporting items?

Picking and transport are two totally different tasks. Picking is very unique to you and should be considered that way. Different product profiles and order profiles demand different solutions, and bespoke picking trolleys tailored for your operation can produce huge productivity gains if done correctly. Transport is all about bulk, bulk, bulk baby… the more you can move in one trip, the better your efficiency gain, as long as this is kept safe. This goes without saying. Powered equipment, including tow tugs, means one operator can transport trains of trolleys and carts, including distribution trolleys, distribution cages, and platform trucks, and seriously pimp up the productivity. This is perfect for feeding production lines, where variations of carts and trolleys can feed various components to the production line.

What’s the most efficient trolley for everyday tasks?

Shelf trolleys are perfect for everyday tasks, keeping the loads at waist height, reducing bending and fatigue, and increasing safety. The disadvantage is that they generally take up more room in your facility. However, there are clever, design-focused folding shelf trolleys that are still appropriate for industrial settings, reducing the space taken up by the shelf trolleys.

Which trolley is best for general supply distribution?

Distribution trolleys and distribution cages are perfect tools for carrying bulk loads. The trolleys and cages can be fitted with shelves and can be manufactured in a huge variation of styles, sizes, and capacities. Shelf configurations mean you can store your products in bulk without the packaging being at risk of damage, offering protection whilst facilitating bulk transport. Different shelf materials can be designed into the trolleys and cages to suit the load. Plastic shelves are great for the aviation industry, eliminating metal-on-metal contact, whilst in a machine shop, hardcore steel shelves can offer the longevity you require in that environment. Configuring the trolley and cage, as always, is key, as your operation will ultimately be different from the next person’s. This is what gives you your competitive edge, so considering bespoke distribution trolleys or distribution cages can always bring benefits.

What trolley is easiest to move around in tight spaces?

Manoeuvrability of a trolley has nothing to do with the trolley chassis itself. Manoeuvrability comes from your wheel configuration, so this is the critical choice if space is tight. Ultimately, having four good-quality swivel castors is the most manoeuvrable, as you have 360 degrees of directional choice while being able to spin the trolley on the spot, on its own axis. However, this has its downsides. Think how difficult it is to guide your shopping trolley at the weekend when you finally get to the wine and beer aisle, the trolley goes its own way. And that’s before you’ve had the beer. This is all to do with the downward force of the load causing pressure on the head bearing of the castor, making all the wheels fight against each other for direction, with the additional pressure of the tyre on the floor also working against you. There are some good articles around that describe these configurations, with honest descriptions of the positives and negatives of them all.

Which trolley is most durable for frequent use?

Standard platform trucks and flatbed trolleys are a great all-purpose mainstay for transporting loads around warehouses and stores. These trolleys and platform trucks come in a huge variation of styles, sizes, materials, and configurations. Generally, a good-quality platform truck or flatbed trolley would consist of a strong steel frame, usually manufactured from angle steel with board placed in it to create a sturdy platform. More recently, with advances in steel processing, box section can produce a stronger frame than angle. Inherently, four sides of steel rather than two is obviously going to be stronger. The choice of rectangular box sections increases the strength even further. This means you can achieve much greater capacities from a much lighter chassis. At the cheaper end of the market, there are pressed steel chassis. These tend to be mass-produced and made to a price, but can still offer great products for those who are moving light loads infrequently over flat surfaces.

What trolley works best for moving tools and equipment?

If tools are in tool boxes and you are moving around site then a sack truck or sack barrow if the perfect tool, if you are working at other people site from a vehicle then aluminium sack trucks or aluminium sack barrows help reduce the strains still further put the sack truck in and out of the van. If you are on sites where a lot of tollers are required, and the floor conditions aren’t smooth, and you need a bigger wheel of rough terrain, turntable trolleys are the perfect site trolley, bulk loads can be transported simple over any ground in any weather, with capacity at half a ton and even 1 ton turntable trolleys and being mounted on a chassis with larger wheels with a good wide tread help cope with the bad ground.
